Jumping for Gym!

Dated: 05/05/2011

The events were run by the community gymnastics coaches employed by the Isle of Wight School Sport Partnerships, and took place at Medina and Sandown High Schools.

There were 13 schools that originally entered into the two celebrations across the Island, but not all could make the events due to various reasons including the school closures due to the polling day.

The schools had the opportunity to have prior coaching from Karen Lakey and her team of gymnastics coaches, using the Key Steps programme.

The three disciplines in the event were on the same lines as the year two celebrations but to a higher standard; Vault, Body Management, and Floor. The vault for year fours uses a low vaulting box, looking at balancing skills and landing skills. Body management focuses on shapes and control of the whole body. The Floor event is where the pupils put movements, skills and shapes together to make a routine. The key with this event was being able to perform to other pupils.

This was a good opportunity for pupils to experience gymnastics, and learn how to control and move their body in different ways, and perform to others. All the pupils had a good time and enjoyed the events. It is hoped that the event will take place again next year, with more entries.
